Average Disc Golf chats with Bob Julio, team manager at Discraft for a 10 Questions Interview.
Tell us what you do for Discraft, what is your role?
I try to do as much as I can but my job titles are Custom golf sales and Team Manager.
How did you first get involved with disc golf?
My friend Al Eckley would always bug me to go and I would always say no that sounds boring and one day he just came and picked me up and drove me to the course without telling me.
What were you very first discs?
I found a 150g DX Beast the first time at the course. I quickly out grew that disc lol.
The Buzzz is one of the most popular discs of all time. Can you tell us about the idea or the origins of the Buzzz?
I just started playing the year the Buzzz was released and I felt it was the new age mid-range. It was flat and very fast and you could throw it almost as far as a driver but had control. I did not work at Discraft at the time so I am not 100% on Jim Kenner’s goals with the Buzzz but I do know all the Team guys loved it instantly.
What are your thoughts on the new tours launched this season?
I think it is great that people are doing everything they can to help take the sport to the next level. It show’s how fast the sport has been growing. I went to a lot of the Pro tour event’s and enjoyed them all a lot. I think things can only get better from here and there will obviously be growing pains along the way.
Which recently released disc are you most impressed with?
I love the Undertaker it came out better than we could have imagined and we spent a lot of time really listening to the players and the Team to deliver a disc they needed.
What does Discraft do different, or maybe better than other manufacturers when creating discs?
The thing I like the most is we will change a disc 15 times if we have to just to make sure it is what we are looking for to fill gaps in the bag.
How often do YOU actually get to go play disc golf?
I get out less than I use to but I try to play once a week. I am always throwing a disc in someway throughout the week though.
What can we expect from Discraft Disc Golf in the next few years?
I hope you see us stepping up our game and see that we are listening and want to give the players what they want. Better product, bigger event’s, more courses, and so much more.
The Ace Race. It appears this model has been copied in different forms by various other manufacturers. Do you have any thoughts on this?
The Main purpose of the Ace Race is to help get new players into the sport. I think that other company’s jumping on and doing this shows how good this event really is. I understand why they would want to have something similar. In the end players can go to all the event’s and as long they are having fun and meeting new people it is a win for everyone in disc golf.
