More than Monetary

The 1st annual St. Jude Disc Golf Charity Invitational wrapped up this Memorial Day weekend and the results were outstanding. Top players from the disc golf world showed up to Seaside, California for 2 rounds in this PDGA A-Tier event. The favorites going into the event had to be Paul McBeth and Paige Pierce. The top players in the sport have been on a tear the entire 2015 season. With limited practice time and the course being new and difficult, scoring would be a challenge for all players.

Will Schusterick would navigate the course in the first round with limited errors and good putting, placing him 1st after the first round. He was followed by Paul Ulibarri, Steve Rico, and Paul McBeth.

On the ladies side, Paige Pierce would continue her great play shooting a 70 (+7) the first round to gain a 1 stroke lead over Valarie Jenkins, Catrina Allen, and Jessica Weese.

The second round gave players a chance to improve on their mistakes, make adjustments and charge up the leader board. Paul McBeth did just that, shooting a round of 58 (-5) t pull into 2nd place. Steve Rico matched McBeth, but both were unable to overcome the deficit leaving Will Schusterick to close out the victory. Schusterick shot 117 (-9) overall to win by a 2 stroke margin.

The course was the hardest one we’ve played all year and the scores showed it. The lack of practice time on the course and only two rounds was tough for everyone to learn the course and to have a chance to present a GREAT score. – Paul McBeth

Pierce would start the 2nd round in the lead as she has done many times this season, but would be unable to hold the lead. In rare fashion, Pierce would lose the lead and lose the tournament as both Catrina Allen and Valarie Jenkins would shoot the hot round of 67 (+4) to force a playoff for the win. Jenkins would come out on top claiming the A-Tier win.

The 2015 St. Jude Disc Golf Invitational was great for disc golf, but even better for the kids of St. Jude. Collectively, almost $214K was raised in support of St. Jude! Not only does this event put more spotlight on the sport of disc golf, it also shows the power that the sport has to be a benefit to anyone involved. Money aside, disc golf benefited, St. Jude benefited, and the kids, most importantly benefited.
