2014 World Championship Payout … Peanuts?

The 2014 Pro World Championships have concluded in Portland, OR. Many will say it is the most exciting they have ever seen. Huge galleries filled the fairways as they watched the top players in the world battle it out for the win. In both the Men’s Pro and the Master’s Divisions, players were tied going into the last hole. The Champ, Ken Climo birdied the last hole to beat out Barry Shultz for the W. Shultz and Climo played together all week, never being further than 2 strokes off of each other!

The Men’s Pro open Final 9 was absolutely amazing. A sudden death playoff featuring Ricky Wysocki and 2X World Champion Paul McBeth ended on hole 7 of the Blue Lake course when Wysocki clipped a tree on his approach, and couldn’t pull out the birdie. Paul McBeth wins his 3rd World Title in a row, joining only Ken Climo as the only 2 players to win it 3 times consecutively.

After such a great week of Disc Golf and probably the most exciting Worlds ever, do you think a check for $5000 is enough to the winner Paul McBeth. 10th place in Men’s Pro Open took $800! Will that even cover a week in the hotel in Portland?

3rd Place finisher Nate Doss took home $2000 and Ricky Wysocki got $3000. It is hard to see how the sport could grow when young aspiring players see the best in the world making peanuts at the World’s Championship.

So, what do you think? How can disc golf generate more cash for payout, and  give players what they deserve not only for their hard work, but for their time, travel and dedication.
